Mr. Basketball USA: Inside Look

Mr. Basketball USA is the title bestowed upon the boys basketball National Player of the Year as selected by GrassrootsHoops.net. We examine the resumes of five early favorites, five others with strong cases and list other potential candidates. The Mr. Basketball USA Tracker, which tracks the progress of the top candidates throughout the high school season, is now in its eighth year.

We conclude our preseason Grassroots Hoops FAB 50 national team rankings release with an in-depth look at the top 15 teams. We began with teams No. 31-50 on Sunday, continued with teams No. 16-30 and now have published an in-depth look at the nation’s 50 best teams. Montverde Academy of Florida is the preseason No. 1 team for the third consecutive season.

No. 1 teams are Oak Hill Academy (East), Montverde Academy (Southeast), Chicago Whitney Young (Midwest), Galena North Shore (Southwest) and Rainier Beach (West).

New FAB 50 National Rankings

Whitney Young of Chicago clinches final top 10 ranking by capturing Illinois Class 4A state title. State champions also crowned in New York, Michigan and New Jersey. We actually waited to release this week’s rankings to include Monday’s New Jersey Tournament of Champions final. The season has two weeks left with state champions crowned in California this weekend and the Dick’s Sporting Goods National High School Tournament concluding on April 5.

These honorees are chosen based on performances from games played from Jan. 20-Jan. 25 and they are based on the same regional breakdowns as our regional Top 20 team rankings.
