No. 1 Montverde Takes Dick’s

Student Sports FAB 50 No. 1 Montverde Academy makes its statement for a second consecutive top-ranking and mythical national title with a 71-62 victory over No. 6 Oak Hill Academy in the Dick’s Nationals title game at Madison Square Garden. The top spot in next week’s Student Sports FAB 50 comes down to the Eagles or Mater Dei of California, which did not compete in the tournament.

Dick’s Nationals Semifinal Analysis

Oak Hill Academy and Montverde Academy advance to the Dick’s Nationals championship game on Saturday at Madison Square Madison (12 pm ET, ESPN) with come-from-behind semifinal victories. Huntington Prep gave defending champ Montverde Academy all it could handle and Findlay Prep couldn’t overcome Oak Hill’s length and depth with seven players.

Dicks Nationals Quarterfinal Wrapup

The Dick’s Nationals tournament kicked off on Thursday at Christ The King High School in New York and even though some higher seeds were knocked off, none of the results were considered big upsets. Findlay Prep will face Oak Hill Academy and Huntington St. Joseph Prep will face Montverde Academy in Friday’s semifinals.

Tuesday McDonalds Practice Report

We attended Tuesday’s McDonald’s All-American practice session and came away with the impression the West team is the favorite going into Wednesday’s game. Mr. Basketball USA candidates Stanley Johnson and Jahlil Okafor standout as does sparkplug guard Tyler Ullis.

McDonalds: Family Matters

The McDonald’s All-American Game has been around for 37 years, so it’s only natural there’s been a few father-son combos that have participated. The first occurrence was in 2001, but for the first time ever a pair of participants are sons of former McDonald’s All-Americans — and both played in the 1983 game.

McDonalds: Okafor Powers West

Updated FAB 50 National Rankings

Mater Dei of Santa Ana wins a historic fourth major division title in a row in California to clinch a top three spot in next week’s final Student Sports FAB 50 National Rankings. Arsenal Tech of Indianapolis wins a state crown as the Hoosier State and California are the last two states to crown its champions. The only games left involve the eight teams competing at the Dick’s Sporting Goods National High School Tournament in New York, which begins a day after the McDonald’s All-American Game April 2 (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

McDonalds: Mental Over Physical

Three players who will participate in the 37th McDonald’s All-American Game on Wednesday night in Chicago will play for their high school program less than 24 hours later in New York. For all three, the motivation to win the prestigious Dick’s Nationals tournament has them more concerned about their mental than physical approach.
