NIKE ALL-AMERICAN CAMP FEATURES SIZE, DEPTH, & GREAT PLAYERS
by Clark Francis, Editor & Publisher of the HOOP SCOOP
Any great class has to have three things: 1) size; 2) depth, and great players.
Well, if the Class of 2001 is a great class, then the NIKE All-American Camp
was a reflection of the class, because it had all three. Let's start with the
center position, which not only was the best position in camp, but also featured the two
best players in camp. And no, one of them wasn't 7'0 Tyson Chandler
from Compton (Dominguez) CA, who likely will be a high first round draft pick in the NBA
draft next spring. Remember, our rankings are based primarily on camp performance
and not college or pro potential, so with us you have to earn it. Instead, we're
talking about 6'9 Ousmane Cisse from Montgomery (St. Jude) AL and 6'9 Jr Amare
Stoudamire from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA. Actually there was little
doubt who the best player in camp was after Cisse handed Chandler his lunch in the evening
game on Sunday night. Cisse blocked Chandler's shots, beat him on the boards, and
intimidated him so much that Chandler stopped going inside. And he didn't just use
his incredible quickness and manchild-like body just to get the best of Chandler. He
played like this all week. We're talking about a physical specimen at 245 lbs. who
plays every game like it will be his last and, as a result, he now moves ahead of
everybody in the rising senior class, except 6'2 Jr Dajuan Wagner from
Camden (H.S.) NJ.
Stoudamire, who was our choice for camp MVP until we saw Cisse's performance against
Chandler, also played all week like he had something to prove. He's an excellent
shot blocker and is extremely skilled on the block, as he uses his drop step, athleticism,
and quickness to score almost a will when he gets the ball down low. We're still not
sure if we'll rank Stoudamire #1 nationally in his class ahead of 6'2 Jr Anthony
Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, but after his NIKE Camp performance, we
sure have to think about it. We also ranked 7'0 DeSagana Diop from
Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA, who just gets better and better, ahead of Chandler.
We were especially impressed by his soft touch out to 12' and his improved post
moves. Diop didn't play with same intensity as Cisse or Stoudamire, but throughout
the week we still thought he edged out Chandler for the #3 ranking in camp at the
center position. Actually, if you throw out his game against Cisse, Chandler did have a
excellent week, as he used his quickness to block shots and dunk in the face of anybody
except Cisse who dared to get in the way. He also rebounded well, but he was at a
disadvantage, because he was not on one of the better teams in camp. As a result,
Chandler's #12 ranking overall seems extremely fair.
The cream usually rises to the top and that's what happened with 6'8 Jr Sean May
from Bloomington (North) IN, who just got better and better as the week wore on.
Just like Zach Randolph, May is very deceptive. It's just hard to
believe that somebody so big is so quick and mobile. He also has soft hands,
excellent moves and great offensive skills. Plus, he's a warrior, which makes it
almost impossible to stop him when he gets the ball in scoring position. After
May's, it like picking the best of the rest. Apparently 6'9 Emeka Okafor
from Houston (Bellaire) TX had a great final day, because he made a huge jump in our
rankings when our Ohio Editor Chris Johnson made some final adjustments
to the rankings after I returned to the adidas ABCD Camp. Also moving up in
the end was 6'11 David Harrison from Brentwood (Academy) TN, but actually
we thought Harrison was one of the more disappointing players in camp. However, that
wasn't case with 6'9 Jr Shavlik Randolph from Raleigh (Broughton) NC,
whose confidence level has skyrocketed, and 6'10 Jr Michael Thompson
from New Lenox (Providence) IL, who also played well at this camp a year ago, but who has
proved to be a disappointment in other settings.
For the third consecutive year Wagner was ranked among the top five players in camp,
despite the fact that he went home early. Apparently, he didn't like his team, which
had a number of smaller guards and, as a result, he was forced to play the two.
Still, Wagner put up big numbers and was unstoppable when he got the ball in transition.
Statistics aren't kept at NIKE, but if they were, Wagner would have been
one of the leading scorers in camp. Another one of the leading scorers in camp would
have been 6'2 Carlos Hurt from Alief (Alief-Elsik) TX, whose shot was
falling all week. Enough said! Everybody also was talking about 6'1 Aaron
Miles from Portland (Jefferson) OR, who simply picked up where he left off a week
earlier at the NBA Players Association Camp, where he was named MVP in camp.
Miles isn't fancy. Instead, he's just efficient, as he makes his teammates better
and runs the offense to perfection.
We've always questioned whether 6'5 Cedric Bozeman from Santa Ana (Mater
Dei) CA would be able to play point guard at the big time college level, but he made a
major step in that direction at this camp. He's a terrific passer, excellent ball
handler, and his judgment and decision making are getting better. As always, we
thought 6'1 Jr Chadd Moore from Huntsville (Lee) AL played well and 5'9 Jason
Fontenet from Phoenix (St. Mary's) AZ might have been the quickest player in
camp. He also is extremely talented and excellent at running the offense, plus he
can shoot the three. As a result, he played his way onto our national top 100 list.
Also playing well were at the point guard spot were 6'2 Jr Marshall
Strickland, who is transferring from Winchendon (School) MA to Hyattsville
(DeMatha) MD this fall, 6'1 Travis Diener from Goodrich (Fond Du Lac) WI,
6'1 Chris Thomas from Indianapolis (Pike) IN, and 6'1 Chris
Thomas from Indianapolis (Pike) IN, and 6'0 Will Bynum from
Westmont (H.S.) IL. One of the major disappointments when we say him was 6'4 Pierre
Pierce from Westmont (H.S.) IL, but apparently he really picked it up the last
day.
The other big story at camp was the emergence of a number of athletic wing players, like
6'7 Andre Patterson from Los Angeles (George Washington) CA, 6'4 Winsome
Frazier from Miami (Northwestern) FL, and 6'6 Alan Anderson from
Minneapolis (DeLaSalle) MN, all of whom didn't have huge reps prior to the camp, but left
ranked among the top 15 players in camp. As a matter of fact, I got an email the day
after the camp was over from somebody on the West Coast telling me that it's hard to
believe that 6'7 Andre Patterson from Los Angeles (George Washington) CA
was ranked ahead of 6'5 Josh Childress from Lakewood (Mayfair) CA.
Well, I would agree, except I was there and Patterson was a dominant force both in
tremendous in transition and on the boards. Frazier's also a world-class athlete and
terrific slasher, but he also can beat you outside with his excellent 3-point shooting.
Anderson isn't a explosive as Patterson or Frazier, but he's a lot stronger, better
on the boards, and just as aggressive, especially as his confidence level skyrocketed late
in the week.
The weakest position in camp was either the power forward or the 2-guard spot, but that
didn't stop us from ranking 6'8 David Lee from St. Louis (Chaminade) MO
and 6'3 Rashaad Carruth from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA both among the
top six players in camp. Actually Lee was one of the most debated players in camp by
our staff, but he played well both times I saw him, so he easy wins the #1 ranking among
power forwards over 6'7 Ed Nelson from Ft. Lauderdale (St. Thomas More)
FL, who is the ultimate garbage player, as he is deceptively mobile for somebody his
size. We also liked 6'9 Terry Liscorish from Toronto (Westhill) ON,
although we question his toughness inside, but liked his ability to step out and hit the
three, which is why think he'll be recruited as wing forward at the college level.
One of the best rebounders, as well as one of the most aggressive athletes in camp, was
6'7 Jason Maxiell from Carrollton (Newman Smith) TX and 6'8 Levi
Watkins from Rockville (Montrose Christian) MD redeemed himself after a lousy
junior season. But after that there was a big drop off, as 6'4 Marcus
Spears from Baton Rouge (Southern Lab) LA was the best of the rest power
forwards.
Carruth played the best we've ever seen him play, because he not only was hitting the open
three, but he also was finishing strong and consistently took his man off the
dribble. He also was hitting everything in sight, which is why he is such a steal
for Kentucky. Remember, that was one of the big rumors throughout the camp and he
made it official for the Wildcats on the final day of camp. We've also talked about
Frazier, but I have a hard time getting excited about the rest of the 2-guards, except 6'3
Chey Christie from Biloxi (H.S.) MS, who was terrific in transiton,
excellent defensively, and surprising from beyond the arc. Christie still
needs to get bigger and stronger physically, but in our mind he played himself into the
top 50 nationally based on his performance in camp. So I'm still trying to figure
out how Christie got ranked no higher than #6 at his position. But like I
mentioned earlier, I wasn't there the last day and some things got changed. Instead,
6'6 Dijon Thompson from Redondo Beach (Redondo Union) CA, 6'5 Keith
Jackson from Cincinnati (Purcell Marian) OH, and 6'5 Edwin Draughn
from Lakewood (Mayfair) CA round out our top five two guards in camp.
