TOP HEAD COACHES IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL
It isn't even close! Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who won two national championships in '91 and '92 and coached the Blue Devils to the final four in '86, '88, '89, '90, and '94, is the clear winner in our quest to find out who are the best college coaches in the nation. But then the picture becomes less clear as 10 coaches all got enough votes to be within our margin of error of being ranked second behing Krzyzewski. Obviously a recent appearance in the NCAA Final Four counts for something, as in the final analysis our #2, #3, and #4 ranked head coaches - Utah's Rick Majerus, Arizona's Lute Olson, and Kentucky's Tubby Smith - have all coached in the last two title games. Cincinnati's Bobby Huggins hasn't been in the final four since 1992, but he's had the Bearcats in the final eight several times and he takes a backseat to nobody in recruiting and his Al McGuire-like relationship with his players. Kansas head coach Roy Williams has watched his teams underachieve during the last four or five years, but he also took the Jayhawks to the final four in '91 and '93. Temple's John Chaney, Purdue's Gene Keady, and Connecticut's Jim Calhoun have never been in the final four, but all are relentless competitors and all have done a tremendous job of maintaining a high level of excellence over the years. Stanford's Mike Montgomery is the new kid on the block, as he took The Cardinal the final four a year ago. Knight's last championship was in '87 and his last final four appearance was in '92, but he doesn't appear to be done yet.
In the next group are an up-and-coming guy in St. John's head coach Mike Jarvis, the retiring St. Louis head coach Charlie Spoonhour, and Oklahoma State head coach Eddie Sutton, who failed to get to the final four when he was at Kentucky, but is only one of several head coaches to get the final four at two different schools (Arkansas in '78 and Oklahoma State in '95). The College of Charleston's John Kresse, who also is ranked as the top coach at the lower Division I level, rounds out the top 15. He's followed by Virginia's Pete Gillen and four Big 10 coaches - Ohio State's Jim O'Brien, Illinois' Lon Kruger, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, and Wisconsin's Dick Bennett.
The "Best of the Rest," which is headed by Valparaiso head coach Homer Drew, who has his team back in the NCAA Tournament again this year. Also on list of "Best of the Rest" are several young coaches like Florida's Billy Donovan, Illinois State's Kevin Stallings, N.C. State's Herb Sendek, UCLA's Steve Lavin, Southwest Missouri State's Steve Alford, Tulsa's Bill Self, Texas A&M's Melvin Watkins, Florida State's Steve Robinson. We have some guys who have been around for a while like South Carolina's Eddie Fogler, Maryland's Gary Williams, Arizona State's Rob Evans, Princeton's Bill Carmody, Pennsylvania's Fran Dunphy, Xavier's Skip Prosser, George Mason's Jim Larranaga, Wake Forest's Dave Odom, Oklahoma's Kelvin Sampson, UNC-Charlotte's Bobby Lutz, Evansville's Jim Crews, UNC-Wilmington's Jerry Wainwright, Miami-FL's Leonard Hamilton, Iowa State's Larry Eustachy, Texas' Rick Barnes, and George Washington's Tom Penders. And of course there are a number of coaches who have been to the final four or won the NCAA championship, like Arkansas' Nolan Richardson, Rhode Island's Jim Harrick, Louisville's Denny Crum, Minnesota's Clem Haskins, Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, Fresno State's Jerry Tarkanian, and North Carolina's Bill Guthridge, who have to be mentioned.
Although there is very little continuity in terms of players remaining all four years in college, the obvious number of great coaches in the game today is close to an all time high. Maybe this explains why interest in the college game continues to grow and grow. And remember we're missing some of the most important guys. Rick Pitino, John Calapari, and perhaps even Larry Brown, are really college coaches masquerading as NBA coaches. And it was the end of an era when North Carolina's Dean Smith and Georgetown's John Thompson both retired.
