One of the most intriguing story lines in New England this year has been the arrival and play of Sudanese big man 7'2 John Riek, who came to the Winchendon (School) MA this fall via Centereach (Our Savior New American) NY.  When Riek arrived it was with a ton of hype after what many considered to be a break-out performance at the Lebron James Skills Academy in early July.  The story became even more intriguing to coaches and fans alike when he enrolled as a post-graduate with the expectation of going straight to the NBA draft in June.  Since that time perhaps no player in the country has had their game dissected more than Riek.  In the fall almost every major media outlet in the recruiting world was anxious to label him a potential NBA lottery pick.  Six months later those same people can’t change their tune quick enough as they are becoming all-to eager to now call him a bust.  There are a couple of morals to this story.  First and most important, it isn’t fair to the kid who is now being criticized less for his play than for not living up to expectations that the media created.  Secondly, players don’t slip that far in six months.  In other words, the media was wrong in September when they thought he was ready to contribute in the NBA and they are wrong now for being overly critical.  The truth of the matter is that Riek has a lot of qualities that you simply can’t teach (obviously his size being tops on that list) and that makes him a prospect for the high-major level right now and a potential NBA prospect down the road.  But the big man is still learning how to play.  He has made some very obvious progress this year playing under one of the best big man coaches in the country in Mike Byrnes, but he still has a long way to go.  If Riek ends up going to college next year, he will have an immediate impact as he is extraordinarily active for a player his size, very agile, and a terrific shot-blocker.  But he needs to develop a better feel for the game, add a good deal of muscle to his frame (especially in his lower body), and develop a go to move with his back to the basket.  If he can do those things, he will not only be a very good player at the college level, but also a very intriguing prospect at the NBA level.
Riek isn’t the only player in the Class of 2008 who is poised to make an immediate impact at the highest levels of college basketball.  In fact don’t be surprised if 6'7 Emmanuel Negedu from Wolfeboro (Brewster Academy) NH and 6'8 Devin Ebanks from Oakdale (St. Thomas More) CT put up better numbers next year.  Both players are exceptional talents who should have a fairly smooth transition.  Pound-for-pound Negedu, who is exactly what the doctor ordered for the Wildcats at the power forward spot, may be the best rebounder in the country as his power, athleticism, and nose for the ball are all top notch.  For anyone who hasn’t seen him, think Ben Wallace with a 15-foot jumper.  Ebanks is a player who has put up huge numbers this year, despite being keyed on by every opposing defense.  He should thrive once he arrives at Indiana and finds himself surrounded by other high level players for the first time.
Things are not any less impressive in New England's Class of 2009, as a pair of the nation’s best post players headline the class.  6'9 Jr Alex Oriakhi from Tilfton (School) NH and 6'10 Jr Erik Murphy from Southborough (St. Mark's) MA lead what may be New England’s deepest class in recent memory, as there are at least 75 players with legitimate hopes of playing Division I basketball.  And that number likely will double next year once another class of post-graduates arrive.  And the Class of 2010 also is darn good at the top, as it features five players who are good enough right now to be ranked among the top 20 players in New England.  They are 6'2 Soph Dion Waters from South Kent (Prep) CT, 6'5 Soph Jason Morris from Lakeville (Hotchkiss School) CT, 5'9 Soph Phil Pressey from Ashburnham (Cushing Academy) MA, 6'8 Soph Nate Lubick from Southborough (St. Mark's) MA, and 5'11 Soph Nadir Tharpe from Worcester (St. Peter Marian) MA.
