COOK EDGES OUT HODGE FOR ADIDAS ABCD CAMP MVP HONORS

by Clark Francis, Editor & Publisher of the HOOP SCOOP

The leading scorer (16.3 ppg) and fourth leading rebounder (7.8 rpg) at the adidas ABCD Camp was 6'6 Julius Hodge from Bronx (St. Raymond's) NY, but that wasn't enough to earn him camp MVP honors.  Instead, our choice as the best player in camp was 6'6 Jr Leonard Cooke from Old Tappan (H.S.) NJ, who was the leading scorer with 19 points and the easy MVP pick for his team in the all-star game.   Cooke also finished tied for 5th in scoring (15.6 ppg) and was third in rebounding (8.6 rpg) for the week, but those numbers a deceiving because he was injured and didn't play but a couple of minutes in one game.   This becomes very important if you throw that game out and only count the seven games where he was a factor.  And what a factor he was, as he had two 25 point games, as well as games where he scored 18, 17, 16, 13, and 11.  He also was in double digits on the boards four times and only once failed to get at least eight rebounds.  In other words, if you don't include the game where failed to score or get a rebound, Cook was both the leading scorer (17.9 ppg) and leading rebounder (9.9 rpg) in camp.  But all this still didn't make Cooke the easy MVP choice, because Hodge only got better and better as the week wore on.  He also almost singlehandedly led his team to the camp championship with a 20 point effort in the title game.  If Hodge played better in the all-star game, we would have given him co-MVP honors, along with Cook.  However, Hodge appeared to be tired, as he only scored five points in the all-star game.
While the center position had some of the biggest names in camp and the point guard spot had the most depth, it was the athletic wing players who got most of the glory.   In addition to Hodge and Cooke, 6'4 Kelvin Torbert from Flint (Northwestern) MI was outstanding throughout the week and, as a result, is our #3 ranked player overall.   As a matter of fact, he was our choice for camp MVP honors after both the first day, where he was shooting 80% from beyond the arc, and the second day.  Torbert is one of those guys you  notice right away, because he's an incredible athlete and he's terrific both inside and outside.  However, he's also so efficient and smooth that you don't usually realize how much he's actually accomplished until you look at the box score.  He's the model of consistency which others in camp would do well to pattern themselves after.   At the top of that list is 6'11 Eddy Curry from South Holland (Thornwood) IL, who started off slow, but then picked it up the second and third day, as he climbed into our top 10 in camp, as well as the #1 ranked center in camp.  However, he missed the first game on the last day and he wasn't much better in the next two.  His 10 points and four rebounds in the all-star game might not be too bad for a lot of guys.  However, if you're talking about going directly from high school into the NBA a year from now, that's enough to give NBA general managers a reason to pause and think twice about drafting Curry.  Unfortunately, this has been the trend all spring and is why we had Curry ranked no higher than #6 before the summer started.   So it comes as no surprise that Curry finished ranked no higher than #25 in camp and only #3 at the center spot.
But Curry was good when compared to 6'11 Kwame Brown from Brunswick (Glynn Academy) GA, who has to be the biggest bust of the camp, as this top five ranked player nationally finished ranked no higher than #45 in camp.  Brown did manage to get into double digits twice, as he averaged 8.0 ppg and 5.1 rpg.  But his head-to-head matchup on the second day when he had only five points and eight rebounds against Curry really tells the story.  Curry's numbers weren't great either, as he finished with 11 points and four rebounds against Brown, but Curry did manage to dominate Brown physically in that game.  While watching Brown and Curry was disappointing at best, watching 6'11 Rick Rickert from Duluth (East) MN, who played like he had something to prove, was like a breath of fresh air.  Rickert finished ranked #13 overall, but after looking at the statistics, where he finished tied for #3 in scoring (16.0 ppg), tied for first in 3-point shooting (56%), and among the top 10 in both field goals and free throw percentage, that might be too low.  An even closer look shows that Rickert never had a game where he scored fewer than 13 points.  He also was right on his average in the all-star game with 16 points.
Another player who might have been ranked too low at the end based on the fact that he was the MVP in the Underlcassmen All-Star Game and finished as the second leading scorer in camp (16.3 ppg) was 6'7 Jr Charlie Rodriguez from Fresno (Clovis West) CA  As a matter of fact, Rodriguez was ranked among our top five in camp after the first day.    And how about 6'7 Mario Boggan from Durham (Southern Durham) NC, who finished ranked #8 in scoring (15.1 ppg) and second in field goal percentage (63.9%) in camp and 12 points in the Underclassmen All-Star Game?  Can you believe that he was ranked only #38 in camp?  Well, I liked him the first day and he was ranked a lot higher as a result. But apparently after I left, he got penalized, because he was doing it against the second unit players, just like 6'5 David Holmes from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA did a year ago.  However, it's tough to figure out who to rank him ahead of even at his position.  The guy right in front of him is 6'9 Robert Little from Fairfax (Pope John Paul VI) VA, who was the leading rebounder in camp (9.6 rpg).  And ahead of Little are 6'9 Jr DeAngelo Collins from Inglewood (H.S.) CA, 6'9 Robert Whaley from Benton Harbor (H.S.) MI, Curry, 6'9 Sani Ibrahim from Atlanta (W.D. Mohammad) GA, and Rickert.   Collins played well, as he finished 5th in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and tied for second in blocked shots (2.3 bpg). Whaley didn't have a great week, but he did show flashes, which explains why he got ranked #29 in camp.  You already know about Curry and Rickert, but Ibrahim was one of our favorite players in camp, because he uses his quick hands to block shots, score and rebound inside.
In their head-to-head battle on the last day 6'2 Johnathan Haggert from Durham (Emmanuel) NC emerged the winner over 6'1 Maurice Williams from Jackson (Murrah) MS, but that didn't stop us from ranking Williams was the #1 point guard, as well as the #4 player overall in camp.   Williams hit 4-8 3-pointers and scored 26 points in the all-star game, plus he finished ranked #9 in scoring (14.9 ppg), tied for second in assists (4.3 apg), and tied for third in steals (1.9 spg).   Obviously, this explains why Williams finished ranked ahead of the other outstanding point guards in camp, like Hargett, 6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, 6'2 Jr Sean Dockery from Chicago (Julian) IL, and 5'10 Terrance Ford from Sugar Land (Willowridge) TX, all of whom played well.  The player who might have helped himself the most in camp was 6'6 Jackie Manuel from Ft. Lauderdale (Cardinal Newman) FL, who was ranked #84 before the summer began.  And it wasn't like we hadn't seen him before.  As a matter of fact, we saw him at the NBA Players Association Camp the previous week and several other times this spring playing with his club team.  Which makes us wonder whether he is just an amazing athlete who thrives in an unstructured setting, like the adidas ABCD Camp, or is this the point where he's elevated his game so that he turns into a great player?  Only time will tell.
Also moving way up is 6'6 Chuck Hayes from Modesto (Christian) CA, who was ranked #19 overall in camp.  He also was the #5 ranked power forward, despite the fact that he's undersized for his position.  However, that didn't matter here, because most of the power forwards in camp were undersized.  But Hayes showed he can hit the three and he's definitely athletic, quick, and mobile enough to defend the three.   So now you know a lot of big time schools are trying to get involved.  Others who really helped themselves with their performances at the adidas ABCD Camp were 6'3 Dommanic Ingerson from Santa Barbara (H.S.) CA, 6'5 Eddie Badsen from Greenbelt (Eleanor Roosvelt) MD, 6'6 Jr Kennedy Winston from Prichard (Blount) AL, 6'8 Jr Marco Killingsworth from Durham (Emmanuel Christian) NC 6'5 Eddie Basden from Greenbelt (Eleanor Roosevelt) MD, and 5'10 Frosh Sebastian Telfair from Brooklyn (Lincoln) NY.  After Brown and Curry, 6'9 Brandon Bender from Louisville (Ballard) KY, 6'2 Salim Stoudamire from Lake Oswego (H.S.) OR, 6'5 Barry Elder from Madison (Morgan County) GA, 5'11 Jason Straight from Chicago (Dunbar) IL were among those who were very disappointing.
